Architects and
architectural firms
come in as many types and sizes as there are projects. From practices that
focus primarily on residential construction - whether high-volume tract
development or high-value custom commissions, to those whose work involves
larger commercial & industrial projects.
Another major category
common in urban areas, such as my hometown of New York City, is that of interior
construction; sometimes referred to as "tenant improvements."
Often, these projects involve extensive structural work, including the moving of
interior walls, construction of stairways between floors, and more.
Of course, many architects
focus on renovation and restoration of existing structures, both residential and
commercial. Some take on the responsibilities of a general
contractor on a project, in an increasingly common practice known
as "Design/Build."
Whatever the nature of your
firm's work, properly designed protection from claims arising from allegations of
professional malpractice is critical in today's increasingly litigious
society.
Remember that regardless of
whether or not it is ultimately determined that you have done anything wrong,
you will still be faced with the potentially crippling cost of defending
yourself and your firm. Even if your firm is
incorporated, you will still very likely find yourself having to mount a
personal defense, since the claim will be based upon "your"
professional services.
